In 1662 William Fowler surveyed Mocktree Forest and Bringewood Chase for William, Lord Craven, of Hamstead Marshall in Berkshire. He was the eldest son of William Craven, a man of humble birth who became Lord Mayor of London in 1610; his main country seat was in Oxfordshire. As he was an ardent Royalist his lands were confiscated during the Civil War but returned at the Restoration, which no doubt prompted the survey at this time. The map is in the Herefordshire archives ref. T87/1; the photograph is reproduced by courtesy of David Lovelace. David has written a report on the history and natural history of Bringewood Chase and the surrounding countryside. This includes a transcription of the field names and personal names on the map as an appendix.
Mocktree is in the parish of Leintwardine, but Bringewood Chase straddles the county boundary, lying mainly in Shropshire. The names of tenants are given and also those of adjacent landowners.
