Dr John Henry Wood (1841 -1914)

John Wood, a General Practitioner at Tarrington, was a great naturalist as well as a French and Latin scholar. He wrote 45 scientific papers, at first mostly on the tiny moths Microlepidoptera and later on flies, Diptera; only three of them are in the Woolhope Transactions and are carefully worded for non-specialist naturalists. His publications led to international recognition and two European butterflies are named after him. His very readable diary, 1891-1894 is now in the Hereford City Library.
